Tao Te Ching · Chapter 16 of 81
"Empty yourself of everything.
Let the mind become still.
The ten thousand things rise and fall
while the Self watches their return.
They grow and flourish
and then return to the source.
Returning to the source is stillness,
which is the way of nature."

致虚极,守静笃。
万物并作,吾以观复。
夫物芸芸,各复归其根。
归根曰静,静曰复命。

A Word on This Chapter
Laozi is offering a method, not a metaphor. 致虚极 — arrive at emptiness, fully. 守静笃 — guard stillness, sincerely. The Self he points to is not your personality but the quiet witness behind it, the part of you that does not move when the world moves.
Today's practice is a small rehearsal: a few breaths, a few minutes of stillness. Nothing dramatic. The same kind of nothing that holds the universe together.
