A small red berry from the wolfberry shrub — eaten by Daoist mountain monks for centuries. Traditionally said to nourish liver and kidney yin, brighten the eyes, and gently support immunity. Chew a handful raw, steep in tea, drop in soup.

Astragalus Root

黃芪 · HUÁNG QÍ

A slender yellow root, sweet and slightly warming, used for two millennia to tonify protective qi (wei qi). Modern research suggests immune-supportive effects. Most commonly added to long-simmered broths.

靈芝 · LÍNG ZHĪ

The "mushroom of immortality" of Daoist iconography. Bitter, calming, said to nourish the shen (spirit) and support deep sleep. Best taken as a long-simmered decoction or dual-extracted tincture.

Chrysanthemum Flower Tea

Pale yellow blossoms, lightly bitter, gently cooling. The traditional summer tea — said to clear excess heat from the liver, soothe red eyes from screens, and calm a hot temperament.

Aged Pu-erh Tea

A fermented tea from Yunnan, aged like wine. Warming, deeply earthy, gentle on the stomach. The traditional after-meal companion for greasy or heavy food — said to help the spleen and clear damp.

Fresh Ginger

生薑 · SHĒNG JIĀNG

The most essential herb in any Chinese kitchen — pungent, warming, dispersing. Sliced into morning tea on a cold day; steeped with brown sugar at the first sign of a chill. Gently moves cold out of the body.

Dried tangerine peel, aged at least three years — the older, the more prized. Aromatic, warming, said to move qi and dissolve damp. A small piece dropped into rice, congee, or tea brings the whole pot alive.

八寶粥 · BĀ BǍO ZHŌU

A grain-and-seed blend of jujube date, lotus seed, longan, lily bulb, peanut, red bean, mung bean, and sticky rice — simmered slowly into the most beloved restorative porridge in Chinese homes. Gentle, warming, beautiful.
